BUSINESS SOLUTIONS

There are several resources for small businesses, non-profits, and 5+ unit multifamily buildings to reduce energy use and save money.

If you are a small business or non-profit with fewer than 100 full time equivalent employees and spending less than $100,000 in annual energy expenses, you can start with the Small Commercial and Not-for-Profits Green Jobs - Green New York Energy Study. This low-cost study is a fuel-neutral, unbiased evaluation of potential low-cost and capital improvement energy efficiency upgrades.

For larger companies, consider the FlexTech program.

Make energy efficiency upgrades

This is often the most effective step to reduce energy use and save money.  National Grid offers up to 60% of the cost of installing lighting upgrades or occupancy sensors. Custom refrigeration measures may also be eligible for incentives.  To be an eligible business, you must:

  • Be an active National Grid electric customer

  • Pay the System Benefits Charge (SBC) - Check your bill

  • Have an average annual peak demand under 110 kW

  • Have an electric rate code of SC1, SC2 or SC2D – check your bill

Get started by calling National Grid at 1-833-208-5960 or visiting the National Grid Small Business website.

Your energy study may suggest other measures to take including installation of highly efficient Heat Pumps that offer heating and air conditioning.  The New York State Clean Heat program offers a range of incentives depending on the system you choose to install.  Learn more about incentives at National Grid’s Upstate NY Business website.

Go solar!

Want to go solar? There are many good reasons to do so, including lowering your operating costs through reduced electric bills, accessing federal and local tax credits for eligible solar projects, and hedging against utility rate increases. Work with a participating NY Sun contractor who will access incentives, and see if you qualify for state and federal tax credits to reduce your costs even more.
